How to Spot Wind Damage on Your Roof

Whether after a particularly brutal windstorm, or over time in a place that’s prone to high winds, your roof can be damaged by these forces of nature. The following signs point to the possibility that wind damage has impacted the integrity of your roof.

Missing or Broken Shingles

Even a single missing shingle needs to be replaced to keep your home protected. Whether your house has cedar shake roofing or another type of roof, check for missing or broken shingles and have them replaced to avoid further damage to your roof or attic.

Odd Appearance

Sometimes it’s hard to tell if shingles are missing, or if any part of tile, asphalt, or composite roofs aren’t there anymore, especially if portions of your roof are obscured by trees, height, or the roofline itself. In such a case, you can still look for anything that seems unusual in some way. For example, parts of the roof may be curling or buckling, or a section may appear uneven, torn, misshapen, or even detached. Any odd appearance needs to be inspected by your local roofers as soon as possible.

Leaky Roof

With a sturdy, intact roof, you don’t have to worry about leaks, but after wind damage, the integrity of your roof may be compromised, and leaks can occur. The last thing you want is a roof that slowly leaks rain or melted snow into your home and damages the walls, ceilings, and even your contents and belongings without anyone noticing until the damage is extensive. If you suspect a leak or observe any signs of leakage, contact Adept Construction right away, and we’ll come out to take a look and complete any necessary roof repairs in a timely manner.

Hidden Damage

Especially with composite roofs, and potentially with any type of roof, wind damage can remain hidden until it’s too late. At first glance, a roof may look just fine after strong winds. Upon closer inspection, however, sections that are hidden from view may have torn away without any immediate signs of damage. Wind can pull nails from the roof, creating small holes where water seeps in, but that are covered by shingles still attached by any remaining nails. This is just one example of damage caused by wind that can remain invisible to the untrained eye.

Miscellaneous Damage

Other parts of the roof and related systems can be bent or torn by wind. Dented and dislodged gutters will create problems if not fixed in a timely manner. Chimney flashing that’s missing or has been split due to wind can also create issues; so will vents that have been damaged.

After periods of excessive wind, or even after a single extreme wind event, it’s important to look around for signs of damage to your roof. If you notice anything unusual, or you suspect damage that may be hidden from view, contact Adept Construction. Our trained roofing specialists will assess the damage and make recommendations. Often, only small repairs are needed, but it’s best to take care of these issues early before they create bigger ones.
